Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej Now Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to be awarded a score of 10 in the Olympic contest. Bela Karolyi later Romanian Gymnastics Coach discovered Comaneci when she was just six years old. She participated in the Romanian Junior Games and placed 13th. In 1970, she won the title. In her very first international event in 1972 she won the event by winning three gold awards. When she competed for the first time as a senior athlete in the year 1975, she bested the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva, a five-time European champion winning four gold medals as well as one silver. The first female to ever successfully complete a backwards double salto while dismounting from an uneven parallel bar.
